Note-taking Procedures

Beginning Fall 2022, UMass DS will begin utilizing the GLEAN app for most notetaking needs. This program allows students access to an app that provides transcription of the course and allows the user to make notes, mark points for review, create to-do lists and otherwise obtain the notes they need, in real time. Transcription of the course occurs during class and clean up of audio and transcription occurs at the rate of 5 minutes per hour of class. This means most students eligible for notes will be able to access them from the start of the semester and not have to share notes with others. In some cases, we will still need to utilize student volunteer notetakers. When we do, we will select from this list and inform you once assigned.

Step 1

Sign up on Clockwork to request to sign up to be considered as a note taker. We will need to know your name, UMass email, student ID and the course (i.e. HIST 100, Section 1) information. This helps us keep an accurate tabulation of which courses we'll have a note taker available, which courses are accommodated by faculty and which courses are still in need of notes for our students. Furthermore, please inform us if you are interested in earning 1 undergraduate academic credit or 45 hours of community service for your efforts. If you elect credit you will be sent a practicum form you will need to complete and return to the Note Taking Coordinator via email.

Step 2
You will receive a confirmation from notes@admin.umass.edu that you are the note taker for that class. Login to Clockwork using your SPIRE ID & Password.
If you are not selected, we will review your schedule and try to find another class you are enrolled in that fits a need we have. You will have to confirm via email that you are willing to serve as the note taker in that class.

Step 3
The first time you upload notes, make sure you upload all notes beginning from the first class on. Following this, you will simply upload your current notes within 24 hours of your class session.

If you encounter any difficulties, please send an email with screen shots of the issue to notes@admin.umass.edu. Please put the course info (i.e. HIST 100, Section 1) in the subject line.
